TUARAN: In conjunction with the week-long school holiday, Chanteek Borneo Gallery here has prepared 25 traditional games for children to play and adults to recapture a piece of their childhood.

The programme, “The Good Ol’ Days”, is a brainchild of gallery director Anne Antah who wanted her sons to engage in physical activities rather than become engrossed in electronic gadgets during school breaks.

“Most of the games that are prepared here cultivate interaction and team work, unlike playing with virtual games which is mostly a solo activity.

“This is a platform to teach children how to play them and to appreciate the games as part of their heritage,” she added.

Anne said the 'must try' games are the “Upih Pinang” where a person pulls a passenger sitting on tree leaves, and “Rampanau” which is walking with bamboo poles.

Other activities available at the gallery open area are the Tikam Tikam, Keng Keng, Lumpakis Cakra, congkak, pipes-blowing, coconut bowling, marbles, slingshot, and tic-tac-toe, among others.

Children will also have a chance to sample food such as ice cream and traditional noodles, all priced below RM1.

Besides traditional decoration, the gallery staff would also dress up in in 60s and 70s fashion. The programme, which ends on Sunday, is open from 9am until 6pm.

The gallery has given out 500 complimentary tickets for schoolchildren here and in the state capital. Ticket for all games are sold at RM5 for children and RM10 for adults.
