KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Customs will go all out to prevent the entry of fireworks into the state, said its director Datuk Janathan Kandok.

He said an operation was ongoing to curb the smuggling of fireworks into the state.

“The department keeps a close watch on all entry points, including the borders of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as courier services companies,” he said after presenting prizes to winners of ‘Jom Simpan Resit GST’ competition at the Customs complex yesterday.

In the past two months, the department had seized about 11 tonnes of various types of fireworks nationwide.

On the Goods and Services tax, Janathan said action had been taken against four companies in the state since the tax came into force on April 1 last year.

“These retail shops and restaurants are either not issuing receipts or are leaving out required details in the receipts.

“They have been compounded RM5,000 each for failing to comply the rules under the Goods and Services Tax 2015,” he added.

Earlier, 118 winners from the state brought home prizes for submitting receipts between April and May for the contest.

Janathan said the competition was held to ensure businessmen followed the rules and were fair to their customers.

The nationwide contest, which will run until end of the year, offers 2,876 prizes including a motorcycle, smartphones, electronic appliances, and vouchers.
