KOTA KINABALU: Consumers here have been advised to stock up on seafood in expectation of dwindling supply during the Hari Raya holidays.

Kota Kinabalu Fishing Boat owners chairman Simon Hong said supply was expected to run low as most fishermen would be on leave.

He said about 100 out of the 130 fishing boats would stop operations the whole week as their workers will return home for Hari Raya celebrations.

"This is not only happening in Kota Kinabalu, but also at other places such as Kudat," he said.

Hong added that supply was expected to run low two days before and after the celebration.

The association members also did not stock up additional supply to meet the demand during the period.

Hong said because of the shortage, traders might increase the price of fish slightly.

He said frozen seafood suppliers would also leverage the shortage to sell their products to consumers.

The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry had placed 21 items, including mackeral and selayang fish, under the price control scheme for Hari Raya. A check showed that mackerel and Selayang fish at the Penampang market cost RM8 per kilogramme.

A customer, Chan Juin Chow, 68, said she usually bought a week's supply of fish for the household.

"Since supply will only be affected for a week, I am not too concerned as I can always opt for chicken."
