LABUAN: Being in constant communications with one of their customers save the lives of 10 fishermen, whose boat sank off Kampung Manikar here yesterday.
The customer, Norita Asli, 34 lodged a report after one of the victims Amat Mahmud, 55, also known as Untung, called her about the incident.
"I usually contact him when they are out fishing to order my fish supplies.
"But this time, he telephoned me to tell me that their boat was sinking and asked me to get help from the Fire and Rescue department,"she added.
Nine of them were rescued by other fishermen at 1145am while the other was later saved by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
The fishermen were found in waters about 2.5km from Manikar beach.
All were in good health, except for one, who suffered minor injuries and received treatment at Labuan Hospital.
Layangan fire station chief Muhamad Azman Awang said the department received a distress call from Norita at 1030am.
The search-and-rescue opertion involved 15 firemen, marine police, MMEA personnel and fishermen,
"The victims, aged between 23 and 63, went deep-sea fishing in the morning.
"At 10am, there were strong winds and waves, which damaged part of their boat and caused it to sink," said Azman.
