KOTA KINABALU: The father of Yaacob Nasran, the 18-year-old boy who died protecting a girl from getting slashed in Sabah, believed there are still a lot of good people in the world

Yaacob, his elder brother Nabiel and six other friends were attacked by sword-wielding men outside a pub at Star City complex in the early hours of Thursday.

The boy, who studied accountancy at a college in Kuala Lumpur, bled to death from slashed wounds on his neck, forehead and back.
His father, Nasran Harun@Nigel said he was overwhelmed by the presence of hundreds of people at a muslim cemetery in Likas here.
He said Yaacob’s friends who were with him during the attack, including the victim he was protecting was also at the cemetery.
“I did not expect there are so many people who knew my child came to pay their last respects.
“Sometimes at time like this, it speaks for itself, look at the people from different beliefs and background who are here. They are not judgmental,” said the father of seven.
He said this was in contrast to netizens who had been using the social media to slammed the family over the incident.
Nasran said Yaacob, his fourth child, was an innocent boy who did not deserve to have his life taken.
As for the men who attacked his son, Nasran said he has faith that justice would prevail for the family.
“This is a strong case and there are a lot of witnesses. We (the family) will let the police to do their job.
“(Police chief assistant commissioner) M. Chandra is a good cop and person. He too has kids. Once in a while, the (judicial) system proves its value to us, the citizen.” he said.

Kota Kinabalu pub attack: Teen managed to check on his friends before dying
BY KRISTY INUS - 17 DECEMBER 2016 @ 8:00 AM
KOTA KINABALU: Before he died from multiple slash wounds, Yaacob Nasran managed to still exert the last of his energy to check on his friends.
The 18-year-old college student and his friends were attacked by sword-wielding men outside a pub in the early hours of Thursday.
Despite being slashed several times in the attack, where he defended a girl from being hurt, Yaacob went back to the scene to see if everyone was alright, according to Munas Van Boonstra, a family friend.
Yaacob collapsed and died of his wounds at the scene. Six people including a woman were arrested while two swords were recovered the same day.
"One of his best friends Raymond saw him, but could not do anything as there was too much blood. His last words to him were 'take care', his eyes were still open,” he said.
Around the same time, his older brother Nabiel, 19, was unconscious, having been assaulted, with injuries to his hand and face.
Yaacob’s father Nasran Harun @ Nigel said his son’s actions reflected his attitude in life.
A man and his ex-wife were arguing outside the pub when Yaacob and Nabiel, who were in a group of four boys and four girls, intervened. The group ended up being attacked.
Met at their home at Tanjung Aru here, Nasran said it was supposed to be the first time since four years that he had all of his seven children with him during the year-end holidays.
Yaacob was the fourth out of seven - four boys and three girls aged from four to 25 - and had been living in Kuala Lumpur, studying accountancy the last five months.
“Yaacob was a good boy. I never had problems with him. He had a certain charisma that drew people to him.
“So when we received the call around 7.30am that there had been a fight involving Nabiel, and when the authorities finally said Yaacob had died at the scene, for a while it didn't sink in," said Nasran, who is a company director.
Yaacob’s former secondary school teacher in SM La Salle, Safri Jeffri, echoed the father's sentiments.
"He was gentle and remained quiet even when provoked, although it was normal for boys to be playful sometimes.
"But he and the family had always been helpful especially when there were school activities, they would give effort and time," he said when contacted, describing the bright student who had loved drama and stage performances.
Meanwhile, Nabiel, during the home interview, was quiet and could only nod in reply. There were occasional tears as he listened to his father talking.
"Yaacob was a happy boy. He and Nabiel, they were like twins and they go everywhere together.
"We all know that what Yaacob would want is for us to celebrate his life," said Nasran when asked how the family will cope with the loss.
On the negative perception that emerged on social media following the case, Nasran shrugged and said; “Everybody has one.
"Before you make any speculation, remember that there's a family behind it, there's a story and maybe the people who really knew what transpired were the eight victims.
"It could happen to anyone, so we want justice to be done. We should not live in a society like this where walking around with swords are allowed," said Nasran.
