Safety Concerns at Likas Bay in Sabah

Visitors of Likas bay recreational park in Sabah are hoping authorities could beef up security following recent news of robbery and molestation cases at the public area.

Two women, who came for jogging on weekday early morning, had been molested and one of their handphones was taken by three strangers.

Bhil Philip, 36, said it was a shame that people could not come to such good 
facility for fearing their safety.

“The park has great view and well maintained, but I stopped going there when people told me about the incident.”

Another jogger Stephen Yong, 27, also shared the same sentiment that the place is dangerous even for man.

“We do not know what kind of people with ill-intention are going to do to visitors here.

“Unless there are something that reduce the crime opportunity risk, it is better not to take risk endanger my life going to the park.”

Action line:
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said police had arrested the three suspects allegedly involved in robbing and molesting two local women.

“Police and City Hall enforcement personnel are collaborating in patrolling the areas around the clock.

“We will also inspect visitors at the park,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK)’s Public Relations and Complaints Department director Syron A. Tunggolou said the authority would provide five bicycles to the police for the patrolling purposes.

The patrolling, which consists of two personnel respectively from police and City Hall, will be conducted in three shifts- 7am to 3pm; 3pm-11pm; 11pm to 7am.

“In near future, the closed-circuit television will be improved and the City Hall will look into the need to add more street lights at the park.”
