RM300m turnover seen from shrimp farm

A SHRIMP aquaculture farm, which will be fully operational by next year, is expected to reap an annual turnover of RM300 million in the near future.
Sunlight Inno Seafood Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong King Ti said, at present, the farm in Kam-pung Taka, here, produces only two tonnes of shrimp a year from its more than 1,000 ponds.
In 2013, the RM1.23 billion farm was undertaken as an Entry Point Project under the National Key Economic Area (NKEA) to help reduce poverty among locals here.
“We believe the output will increase over the next two or three years.
“The capacity should be between 10,000 and 12,000 tonnes per annum,” said Wong during Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman’s visit to the farm recently.
For now, the shrimp from the farm is sold to factories.
However, in future, the farm would export its products to South Korea and Japan, where there was high demand, said Wong.
He added that the farm expected to provide 3,000 jobs, more than 75 per cent of which would be for people from Pitas.
“The people here work very hard. I believe they will appreciate the jobs offered to them. Besides training, we also have hostels for their accommodation.”
