KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tourist Association will get big on developing rural tourism
next year to complement a move chartered by the state government.
Its president Tonny Chew said the association
has about 100 members consist of travel agents, accommodation providers, tour
guides among others.
“Next year will be the third year the
association is promoting tourism products such as handicraft and
eco-tourism at lesser- known destinations in the state.
“Among the familiarisation trips to be
organised are visits to Kudat, Tenom valley, Sandakan, Tawau and
Semporna,” he said during a get-together event held here recently.
In previous years, the association made several trips including Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and
Pitas.
He also attributed the success of those
projects with great support from the government agencies and ministries.
Chew added their trips will be participated
by the association members and media to better understand those destinations.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment
ministry had recently announced the direction of the industry will be towards
benefitting everyone including those small stakeholders.
The state government has also allocated a budget
of RM228 million for tourism development next year.
Chew said in developing tourism, he hoped its
members will work together instead of focusing too much on competing among each
other.
“Competition is good, but when stakeholders
sharing information it will be a win-win situation for everyone.
