END IN SIPADAN campaign
KUNAK: The Tourism and Culture Ministry has continued its year-long "End inSipadan: campaign by exploring more diving sites here.
The State ministry's director Ag Ahamad Zaki Abu Bakar said the area had a good potential to be developed as it was near Semporna.
"Kunak waters is beautiful and it is only about an hour away from Semporna town. During a diving programme here, we bumped into bumphead fish and turtles," he said, adding the exploration was held in collaboration with district council and local dive operators.
Zaki said the project was a continuation of the ministry's End in Sipadan campaign launched last year.
The campaign, which ended in Sipadan, Semporna, last November, also promoted other diving trails in Kota Kinabalu, Mantanani, Kudat and Lahad Datu.
It highlighted local operators who were engaged in conservation work, underwater mapping as well as providing jobs to the community.
Zaki, who was part of the six-diver exploration team, managed to remove two "ghost fishing" in Kunak waters.
"We managed to save three parrot fish and nine porcupine puffer fish, but there was a dead goat fish in the cage."
Ghost fishing refers to any type of gear that had been lost, dumped or abandoned in the sea that would the fish stock.
