Kk Schoolkids wow tourists with their expert calligraphy skills

KOTA KINABALU: A group of about ten young schoolchildren demonstrated their skill at Chinese calligraphy at the famous Gaya street market here recently.
The students of SJKC St Peter, aged between 9 and 11, were at the market with their school teachers as early as 6am.
Comprising both ethnic Chinese and non-Chinese students, the group quickly became the centre of attention, as their beautiful creations took shape.
One teacher, Samantha Liaw, said that the event was the school’s 12th annual showcase organised by members of its Chinese Calligraphy club
"Through this programme, we hope to share Chinese culture with the public, as Chinese New Year is coming soon.
"Besides that, the schoolchildren get the chance to interact with the public while creating and distributing their artworks to visitors," she added.
One unique characteristic of the school, which is located about an hour from the state capital, is that 90 per cent of its students are non-ethnic Chinese – a fact not lost on curious visitors.
The showcase, which runs today and next Sunday, is receiving donations from the public, which the club will use for their future programmes.
Former student Dewi Eva Awang China, 14, joined her juniors for the activity today.
"I learned Chinese calligraphy since Year Three, and have been enjoying the art.
"Although I am now at SMK St Joseph, I am glad to be part of the activity for the fifth year," she added.
