KOTA KINABALU: Parents or caregivers should be more accepting of children with autism, for both to be able to handle the situation.

Catherine Lai, 50, whose 19-year-old daughter is diagnosed with autism since four years old, said besides acceptance, the strategy is to deal with the condition one time at a day.
“It is a disorder, not a contagious disease, whereby kids with autism look like everyone.

“They are just facing problems in socialising,” she said during the Ride for Autism Awareness programme here.
Lai added when her family started therapy for Seanna Goh, the second child at the age of four, she learned the most effective method is to do repetition on skills that have been thought at the therapy centre.

“Like every parents, our hope is the children will become independent as we do not know what will happen.

“But now, she has learned how to cook for herself, “ Lai added.

She also said early detection of the condition and support group helped both caregivers and children with autism.

The 38-kilometre cycling programme between City Hall and hoteliers joined by more than 100 cyclists, is to raise fund for autism communty. Among them was City Hall Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.

Yeo said City Hall has been supporting such event, which is held for the fourth time, to show support to special needs community.
“The city is aiming to create a liveable place for everyone as the government has been promoting caring society.
“People have misconceptions that if someone have shortcomings, they are not able to function. In fact, they are like us just that it takes time for them to do it," he added.
