KENINGAU: The three-term incumbent of the Liawan state seat has promised to continue ensuring constituents have access to good education.
Datuk Sairin Karno, who is defending Liawan in the 14th General Election (GE), said the progress of an area is often associated with accessibility to education.
“When I joined politics in 1981, there were only 12 secondary schools in the Tenom, Keningau and Pensiangan parliamentary constituencies.
“This year, the number of schools has increased to 27, and upcoming schools include Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Trus Madi, SMK Dalit and Sekolah Menengah Sains,” he said, adding the government will continue to build more learning institutes.
Sairin, 63, said as Keningau has the combined size of Melaka, Penang and Perlis, there are two community colleges being set up in the constituency.
As for public higher learning institutes, funds are still pending to build a 12-hectare Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) branch campus at Apin-Apin here and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) at Sook.
He said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government has never sidelined anyone in terms of bringing development or helping to improve the lives of people.
“I believe people still have faith in BN and they have to see the bigger picture - that the government is bringing positive changes to people through education and learning facilities in the constituency.
“Not only education, the government has also initiated the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and Housing Project for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT) schemes and is continuing to improve infrastructure including roads here,” he added.
The Keningau Umno chief is facing Rasinin Koutis from Parti Warisan Sabah, Kong Fui Seng from Parti Solidariti Tanahairku (Star) and Hussein Madatin from Parti Cinta Sabah in a four-cornered fight.
He said the multi-cornered fight showed the beauty of Malaysia as a democratic country but questioned the real motives of opposition parties in contesting in GE14.
“If the opposition wins, they cannot do or bring any development for the people.
“For example, the Bingkor state seat (won by Star president Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan), luckily (BN) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan is the incumbent Keningau member of parliament,” he said, adding the BN government is fair in looking after people regardless of whether the constituencies are represented by opposition parties.
Liawan has 17,183 voters with 38.4 per cent bumiputera muslims, 39.3 per cent bumiputera non-muslims and 18.6 per cent Chinese.
