PENAMPANG: Two out of four phases of a flood mitigation project here are scheduled to be completed in two years, said Kapayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang.
“There are four phases...the first two have been launched and funding from the federal government has also been approved.
“One of the challenges is the land owners. The project requires a widening of the drains and thus land acquisitions,” she said, referring the two phases at the Kibabaig and Lido areas which are scheduled to completed within two years.
As of now, the work progress at Kibabaig stands at 40 per cent while Lido is at 10 per cent.
Jannie, who was met during the cleanup of Donggongan Tamu grounds here, added that the district officer Luvita Koisun would meet with land owners for them to get a better understanding of the importance of acquiring the land for the project to proceed.
As a short term measure, the authorities would also look into reducing hill cutting and land clearing which will contribute to flooding besides have the community be better prepared for natural disasters.
Penampang is one of the severely flooded districts due to continuous rainfall since two days ago.
Present was Moyog assemblyman Jennifer Lasimbang who said that she would appeal to the United Nations in Malaysia to not only provide assistance in terms of money and goods but also in the technical aspect.
Meanwhile, Jennifer added that the cleanup programme also saw the launching of “Moyog Broom Army” today which will aim to clean up public places.
“The police under their Skuad Tangan Bersalamanan which has about 200 personnel will also help us.
“We will go to schools namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Kibabaig and Sekolah Menengah St Michael which are badly affected by the flood.”
