KOTA KINABALU: Fifteen children from here will represent Sabah in the Malaysia World Dancesport Federation Open Championship next week.
Nabalu Dancesport Club principal coach Camelia Devi Lasmana said the athletes, aged between 7 and 15, would be leaving for Kuala Lumpur to take part in the championship on Aug 18.
“They are expected to take part in about 30 events and compete with 500 dancesport athletes,” she said.
“The contestants include participants from China, Japan, Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom.
“I cannot predict how many medals we will win but our athletes are ready. They are in high spirits and they will give their best,” she said, adding that a few of the state representatives were taking part for the 5th time.
“Dancesport has already been featured in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and the Sea Games. This is what we used to call ballroom dancing.
“It is now recognised by Education Ministry and points are given (for students) in the school curriculum.”
Camelia said there were 40 students in the club, mostly children.
