KOTA KINABALU: The 8th edition of Borneo Eco Film Festival this year will cover environmental themes and children’s rights.
The festival’s programme director, Melissa Leong, said the films would include spotlights on wildlife and the human connection, islands and oceans, consumers and waste, climate change as well as community filmmaking.
“We are proud to bring a series of award-winning and thought-provoking environmental films from around the world, some of which will be Asian and Southeast Asian premieres right here in Kota Kinabalu,” Leong said during a press conference about the festival which would be held from Nov 2 to 4 at Suria Sabah shopping mall.
The non-profit event is organised by Melapi – the Society for Holistic Outreach, Research and Environmental Action.
A total of 17 films will be screened for free, including The Last Honey Hunter, Water Warriors, Plastic is Forever, Blue, The Last Animals, Love and Bananas: An Elephant Story, Adaptation Bangladesh: Sea Level Rise, Kokota: The Islet of Hope and Jane.
In partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Leong said Girl Rising (2013, USA, 101 mins) would be screened as the event’s opening film. It features the stories of nine girls from developing countries, who struggle and overcome great obstacles to obtain an education and change their fates.
She said most of the screenings would be followed by panel sessions or talks by experts.
The festival board president, Dinoza Mahruf, said there would also be a Children’s Programme that would include a storytelling session, special screening of short films for youngsters and their families. For details, visit //beff.org.my/.
