KOTA KINABALU: Sabah government will work with authorities to ensure independent China tourists to the state have better experience with proper guidance and assistance.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew was referring to incidents where tourists encountered problems returning home as they did not have their passports stamped at Immigration counters upon arrival into the state.
“The ministry had met with Immigration officers, and we have agreed to enhance (the service) by having more personnel to assist tourists upon arrival (and guide them),” she said, adding that assistance was also being offered by Malaysia Airports staff.
She said personnel who could speak Chinese should be at the airport and banners were being prepared for guidance.
Liew was speaking during a press conference on the Brand Laureate Industry Champion Brand ICON Awards 2018 : Destination Branding, which is being granted to Sabah Tourism Board.
As of October, China tourist arrivals stand at 45 per cent from International arrivals, or 505,275.
“We also have had short meetings with the mayor (Datuk Yeo Boon Hai) who agreed to put up signages in Chinese to assist China tourists on navigating around.
“The Chinese Consul general (of Kota Kinabalu) has also offered to assist us in terms of translations,” she added.
Meanwhile, on next year’s target, the ministry aims to have more than 4 million arrivals with balanced distribution markets from both China and the west.
She added the target was an increase of 4 per cent from this year’s 3.8 million arrivals.
Present was Sabah Tourism Board general manager Suzaini Sabdin Ghani.
