KOTA KINABALU: Despite having to skip Christmas celebration with their loved ones, Kota Kinabalu International Airport staff here count their blessings as they strive to ensure a smooth travel experience for passengers.
Mark Desmond, 33, who supervises airport ground-handling task, said he would be working both on the eve and Christmas day during office hours.
“Being a supervisor for the second year, I chose not to apply leave as I have to ensure the operation goes smoothly, which include making sure there is no delay nor inadequate manpower.
“Christmas is more for the children to enjoy as they will get presents, new clothes and food. For adults, it would be more on prayers and gathering,” he said.
His colleague, Azmin Zainal, 46, whose majority of family members were Christians, said he would attend another gathering with his relatives during New year’s eve.
“Christmas eve will usually be the highlight as everyone returns home for dinner.
“But as my off days fall on different days, I could only make it to another dinner,” he said, adding it would be the third year he would be on duty during Christmas.
Airline guest services assistant Karen Audrey Han, 34, from Papar said it was her 10th year working on Christmas day.
“During the first three years, it was sad and overwhelming for me as I was not able to celebrate Christmas with family.
“However, over the years, it becomes fun to work at the airport as the place also becomes merrier with Christmas greetings from passengers and other colleagues from different backgrounds,” she said.
Han said the festive greetings made their day, apart from the double pay they received for working a on public holiday.
