KOTA KINABALU: Armed with her paint brushes and fuelled by the desire to help the needy, a 17-year-old girl made use of her talent by helping to raise funds for underprivileged children.
It was Charlotte Liau’s first attempt at running her own charity pebble-painting booth at a night market at Sabah Street Art Gallery here.
Liau’s mother, Lily, said the booth, dubbed as ‘Charlotte’s pebbles’ aimed to raise money for two charity bodies, namely, World Vision and Shan Xin.
“As Christmas is drawing near, Charlotte wanted to do something for babies and children who are in need of meals, necessities and funds for operations.
“We learned about this ‘Christmas at Pillars of Sabah’ event as Charlotte’s sister is one of the artists painting one of the pillars at the venue,” she said.
Pillars of Sabah is a project held in conjunction with Malaysia Day on Sept 16 with 30 Sabahan artists including renowned Red Hong Yi who painted inspirational individuals on the pillars.
Meanwhile, project organiser Jared Abdul Rahman said the three-day event, which started on Friday was supported by Sabah Tourism Board, City Hall and Sabah Art Gallery.
The market, which aims to promote arts at the Pillars, has 44 vendors selling food and craft stalls.
“We did not charge the vendors as they are taking risks as this event is held in the open and without canopies.
“We are blessed that the weather had been good and there were crowds of people who came and appreciated the arts on the pillars,” he said, adding that the event, which was a plastic-free event was also aimed at raising environmental awareness among visitors.
