LAHAD DATU: A local dive operator here attributed one of the newly discovered dive site off Silam waters here as Journalist reefs.
Pirate Divers founder Glen Hamirullah, 56, said the operator decided to give recognitions to media’s contributions in spreading the beauty of the undisturbed Silam waters.
“Journalist Reefs, has a depth of between 27 and 30 metres, which is meant for advance or experienced open water divers.
“Most of them are huge vase corals while on the west is white sands and huge rocks,” he said, adding among the marine habitats are blue and yellow-tail fusilier, stonefish, big eyed fish and nudibranch.
He said the Journalist reefs is one of the 55 dive sites that the operator discovered in Silam waters since it began operation in 2009.
However, Glen added that the underwater mapping of the Reef has covered most of the areas, which the sketch would be useful for dive masters who want to guide divers at the sites.
The local-born dive instructor, who had mapped several hundreds of Malaysia’s most beautiful dive sites since 1997, relied on memory to sketch reefs after making several dives.
“Lahad Datu has many many beautiful and undisturbed dives which corals are available at the depth of 27 metres.
“At Silam waters, whale shark can also be seen between March and May, while schools of tuna fish are found between October and December,” he added.
Other dive sites that available include sunken Japanese Timber Wreck in 1980s,
Pirate Divers, which brings divers on a traditional fishing boat, is one of operators featured in Tourism and Culture Malaysia Ministry’s year-long “End in Sipadan” campaign in 2017 to promote diving trails around Sabah.
