Kinabalu Mountain guides and porter are among top 10 winners in Unicef Borneo Marathon.

KOTA KINABALU: Mountain Kinabalu guides and porter were among the top 10 winners of men's category in 42kilometre run in Unicef Borneo Marathon here.

They are Sapirin Sumping, 39 and his brother Safrey 36, as well as Daved Simpat, 37.

Sapirin who clocked at 3:01:31 secured fifth place; Daved placed at 7th after finished the race at 3:06:09 while Safrey is at 9th place by clocking 3:22:24.

The Sumping brothers who have joined the annual event here for 11 years, admitted that participants this year are stronger and with better pace.

The trio were also winners of Climbathon and several ultratrail runs.

Champion of the men's category Safree Sabdin finished 2:49:44 which he ran at the average pace of 4min/kilometre.

"Working as guides and porters at the mountain does help in training for this marathon.

"Specifically, it takes us about 10 weeks to prepare in terms of endurance and speed," he said when met at the venue at Likas Stadium here.

There were 10,686 runners from 41 countries took part in full, half, 10km and 3km running categories.

Present at the event were state Assistant Youth and Sports minister Arunarnsin Taib, mayor Datuk Nordin Siman, state Health director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi, Unicef representative Marianne Clark-Hattingh, Unicef Malaysia ambassador Lisa Surihani and Kinabalu Running Club president Dr Heng Aik Cheng.
