PENAMPANG: Sabah’s harvest festival this year will see 54 ethnics and subethnics come together to get to know each others traditional delicacies.
Dubbed as “Sodop Moginakan” or “A night of feasting” in Kadazan language, there will be 200 people from those ethnics to gather at Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) hall here on May 26 to learn about cuisines.
The co-organising chairman Kenny Chua said the feast was the first to be held to promote unity among people of Sabah.
“The event, which will be held between 7pm and 1030pm at KDCA here, will see people not only from Kadazandusun Murut community but also from other ethnics showcasing their delicacies.
“Those food, which have between 20 and 30 varieties, are not only the commonly served such as hinava, tuhau, among others. We expect some dishes are from the interior of Sabah,” he said in a press conference.
Besides the food cultural exchanges, the state government has also allocated additional 0.80 hectare of land for non-Kadazandusun Murut community to build about 20 traditional houses to showcase their culture to public.
Chua, who is also state Assistant Finance minister, said that KDCA would start open the venue to public on May 11 to experience the festival.
Due to bigger celebration of the festival, he advises the public to use ride-hailing services due to limited space of parking.
Sabah celebrates month-long of harvest festival or Pesta Kaamatan starting with a grand launch in selected district on May 1.
This year , the state government has chosen Pitas to kickoff the celebration then moved to other districts every weekend and will culminate in a state-level celebration at KDCA here in Penampang on May 30 and 31.
