KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) today said it is ready to face a possible by-election for the Kimanis parliamentary seat.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who is also Warisan president, said the party would not take the by-election lightly and that it would work hard to approach the grassroots community.
He was commenting the Election Court's recent decision to declare Datuk Seri Anifah Aman's victory in Kimanis in the 14th general election null and void.
The decision on the election petition, which was filed by Warisan's GE14 candidate Datuk Karim Bujang, was made following irregularities on election offences including additional ballot boxes and the non-availability of essential forms.
"We will look into it as the process is still ongoing as an appeal can still be made.
"Therefore, I do not wish to elaborate until the Election Commission announces anything," he said after launching the Information Technology Symposium 2019 organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Computer Services department and SABAH.NET here today.
Shafie also said Warisan would decide on a suitable candidate "when the time comes".
However, he did not exclude the possibility of fielding Karim to contest the seat again.
During a separate event at Tanjung Aru Library here, Sabah PKR chief Datuk Christina Liew said her party would lend its full support to Warisan's candidate should a by-election be called in Kimanis.
"Based on a consensus during the last general election, the Kimanis seat is meant for Warisan.
"PKR will not be contesting but will give our full support to the candidate," said Liew, who is also a Deputy Chief Minister.
