SEMPORNA: A group of engineers are sinking a tube well with the aim of supplying clean water for schoolchildren and villagers in Pulau Mabul, near here.
The project is part of the second edition of Sabah Society of Petroleum Engineers' (SPE) social responsibility programme.
Dubbed as “Care 4 Ocean”, its committee member Edwin Cheng said this year, the team faced a daunting challenge in trying to end the water drought problem faced by the school and villagers on the island.
“As they usually depend on rain water, sustainability and continuity of water source is a serious issue.
“With the extensive financial support from our partners, the team managed to fund the construction of a fresh water tube well for the benefit of schoolchildren and the community, to say the least,” he told the New Straits Times.
He said to date the SPE members managed to collect RM86,000.
The first tube well, which costs some RM40,000, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year.
As for the remaining funds, it would be used to drill a well for villagers.
Besides the water well, a group of 15 SPE members led by Ahmad Idriszuldin and staff from the Borneo Divers Mabul Resort, here, had also managed to collect about 250 kilogrammes of trash on land and in the waters during the programme, which took place recently.
The engineers also conducted environmental awareness talk for the students and teachers at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Mabul.
