KOTA KINABALU: The New Straits Times Press bagged 10 main and eight merit prizes at the 2019 Kinabalu Press Awards tonight.
New Straits Times' Avila Geraldine, Olivia Miwil and former reporter Kristy Inus won the Journalism Award for team entry on endangered wildlife species in Sabah.
Olivia also won the merit prize for Sports Journalism Award.
Team entry by Thaddius Unnip, Suzianah Jiffar, Fardy Bungga, Norasikin Daineh and Avila Geraldine won the main prize for News Reporting (Bahasa Malaysia).
Norasikin also won Environmental Journalism Award (Bahasa Melayu) for her article on the last surviving rhinoceros "Iman".
Berita Harian's Poliana Sidom won the main prize for Business and Economic Reporting category.
The main prize winner for Best News Photograph Award was won by Malai Rosmah Tuah while Khairull Azry Bidin brought home prizes for Sports, Environmental photography and Best Picture Awards.
Stringer Rafiqah Dahali won the main prize for Best Photograph for News stringers category while Hazsyah Abdul Rahman won the Journalism Awards for News stringers (Bahasa Malaysia).
Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the media has an important role in building the nation.
“This is especially true when people come from different background and culture."
