KOTA KINABALU: About 300 people from the tourism fraternity here have expressed their support for the people of China through a special video in the wake of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Organised by tour agent Kate Chin, the industry players in the state responded to her request for the video within 24 hours. They comprise travel agents, souvenir shop owners and staff, tour operators, and tour guides.
“Besides sending a supportive message to (the people of ) China to stay resilient, the video also aims to encourage players in Sabah’s inbound tourism industry to remain positive and united during this challenging time.
“The current situation is, unfortunately, affecting them (the tourism players) given that China is their significant source of customers,” Chin said in a statement.
The shooting locations took place at three popular tourist spots namely Tun Mustapha Building, Tanjung Aru Beach and the “I Love KK” signage at the state capital.
“These locations were selected to remind tourists from China of the beauty of Sabah,” Chin said.
Sabah government has temporarily suspended all incoming direct China flights to Sabah starting Jan 31 following the outbreak of 2019-nCoV.
The decision, which is to prevent the spread of the disease has affected local tourism. Checks by the New Straits Times with industry players showed that some of the tour companies saw a drop of 70 per cent in sales after the travel ban.
Last year, China tourist arrivals were the highest as compared to other international visitors.
