KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans who are studying in peninsular Malaysia have been told not to return to the state during this two-week Movement Control Order.
State Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the students should "stay put" at their current locations to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“We would like to advise these students not to return to Sabah and stay at the dormitories or other accommodations.
“This is because coming back will involve costs and at the same time, the duration and travelling process could expose them to virus infection,” he said in a statement.
There are 3,260 state-sponsored students outside Sabah including overseas.
Dr Yusof added that the ministry is monitoring the situation from time-to-time via Yayasan Sabah's office and State Communications office in Kuala Lumpur.
He said the government had also contacted several student leaders based in peninsular Malaysia to update them on the request.
“Most of the students are at the campuses as the (management) of the university wanted them to stay in the campus to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“However, we were also informed that there were students that have returned home safely including those state-sponsored ones due to the school and semester break,” he added.
In Sabah, Dr Yusof said student of higher learning institutions are advised to go back as the state-owned training centres and colleges would be closed until March 31.
“However, those who are staying at dormitories, there are food supply and the cafetaria will be opened according to schedule,” he said, adding the same applies to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
