KOTA KINABALU: Christian families in Sabah, similar to those around the globe, are celebrating an unusual holy week which culminated on Easter today amid restricted movement to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Jenne Lajiun from Penampan said she was sad that the holy week masses- Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday- could only be streamed online instead of the faithful going to church.
“I followed the online masses in Kuching via Youtube, I think even the priest was sad that the celebration could only be done virtually.
“The priest had said that usually during the holy week, the church would be full but this year they were by themselves,” said the mother of three.
For Joshua Chong, 30, he did not mind not being able to observe the holy week in its usual traditional manner.
“I feel good and I did not feel anything was lacking by not being present at the church.
“It is more important to get to know the meaning of the holy week and the resurrection of Jesus,” he said, adding his father, who is a catechist at church, conducted the feet-washing rites for the family on Thursday night.
About 250km from here, villagers of Kampung Long Pasia in Sipitang, gathered at their respective houses for a “remote” Easter Sunday mass at 9am today.
Lait Lakong, 48, said as they placed speakers outside the church, congregants were able to listen to the pastor's sermon.
“Even for the Holy Eucharist and fellowship, we are doing it within our own house compound.
“This is my first time celebrating Easter this way, but I am grateful that we are able to worship Him.”
