RANAU: Sabah’s Panalaban is undoubtedly the highest spot in Malaysia where Covid-19 disinfection has been carried out.
Sabah Parks ranger Julaimin Kimin said four days ago, staff there conducted the exercise at new hostels in the area – which is the final pit stop, at 3,272 metres above sea level, for climbers heading for Mount Kinabalu’s summit.
“It was the first disinfection exercise done by Sabah Parks during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
“We will be having another one tomorrow to cover more areas,” he said, adding that Sabah Parks will not take any risk of having infection, although there are no visitors at the moment.
Julaimin added that staff from Sabah Parks, Sutera Sanctuary Lodge and Mountain Torq are still working on a rotation basis during the MCO for maintenance and disinfection works.
Every day, they check each other’s temperatures to ensure everyone is well. For now, all of them are healthy.

Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, the mountain saw a maximum of 168 climbers daily.
However, Panalaban is now quiet, as the last batch of climbers descended on March 18 and climbing activities are halted temporarily.
“There is not much happening during the MCO, it is just quieter and it is colder at Panalaban.
“But some of us spotted the presence of more deer wandering around the premises. The species does exist in the highlands, but they are hardly seen when there are many people,” he added.
Last week, an Orangutan nest, about 80cm in size, was also seen 10 metres above ground near the Poring canopy bridge at Kinabalu Park here.
