KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry will look into the welfare of food delivery riders to help them get assistance from the state government.

Its Minister Ginger Phoong said about 90 per cent of the riders are young and they serve the public daily during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

There are more than 500 riders in Sabah in the food and goods delivery services.

"They are considered frontliners during this time because they made sure people are supplied with food (and other services), but, they have been overlooked.

"Unlike e-hailing drivers, these riders are not eligible for the RM500 cash assistance (from the federal government)," he said.

Phoong said he would raise the issue at today's state Cabinet meeting to assist the group.

Yesterday, Phoong also distributed food baskets to youths, including delivery riders at a shopping mall here.

The aid, called #dapurbelia, is similar to assistance given by the state government to eligible recipients.

He added the ministry has also allocated RM360,000 to assist young people through the Youth Council.

"There are about 100 youth clubs and associations and the Youth Council will coordinate and collaborate at all levels to channel the aid."
