KOTA KINABALU: The "MCO Artworks Exhibition" at the Sabah Art Gallery is offering a glimpse into life in the state during the Movement Control Order (MCO), which was implemented on March 18 this year.
The exhibition features the works of over 40 local artists who documented life under movement restrictions, and under the cloud of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among them are Zayrul Rizo Leong, 36, who drew a series of comics illustrating how people coped during the trying period.
"It was quite boring throughout the MCO period and I started to draw something that reflected the voice of the people.
"Among them were the children who could not wait to return to school, or people wanting to go out and walk around.
"I have also shared my artwork on my Facebook page with messages that we should not take things for granted," he said, adding that he had drawn 12 of the comics before being approached by the Gallery for the exhibition.
The lockdown inspired other artists to produce work featuring Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and items which came to prominence during the MCO, including dalgona coffee, kuih pinjaram and snake plant.
Artist Intan Munirah Hamzah, meanwhile, imparts Covid-19 prevention advice in her works, such as "wash your hands", "watch your distance" and "stay at home".
She said her designs were inspired by famous painters like Vincent Van Goh, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Gustav Klimt, among others.
Face masks, the must-have item for everyone, was the inspiration for Rosnie Veronica Sabung.
The artist used beads to create native and modern patterns on three fabric masks, and a 3-ply mask.
According to Sabah Art Gallery's Facebook page, more than 300 artworks are on display in the exhibition, on the third and fourth floor of the building, until Oct 31.
The gallery, which is open daily from 9am to 5pm, is offering free entry to visitors until the end of this month.
