Students told to practise new norm as a culture to prevent infections [NSTTV]

KOTA KINABALU: The first day of school for Form 5 and 6 students in Sabah has progressed smoothly.

State Education director Dr Mistrine Radin said 236 secondary schools including private institutions had prepared their premises a month in advance to follow the new normal guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

"While the learning process is important, the culture of social distancing and handwashing should be practiced too.

"As we know (before this) students hold hands and like to be close with each other, we need to implement this culture (of the new normal) as we do not want to have school clusters," she said after visiting Sekolah Menengah Tinggi, here.

A total 45,065 students and 16,703 teachers are expected to return to school today.

Mistrine added that while the guidelines had set to have between 18 to 22 students in a class, some classes in Sabah could accommodate more than that.

"Some classes are bigger and as long as there is distance (of at least 1 metre) between students, we can have more."

As for the returning of all students in the near future, Mistrine said the department has briefed all school principals over the issue.

"There is a guideline for that, but let the Education ministry announce the details."
