KOTA KINABALU: A baby pygmy elephant which was rescued and kept at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, here, was released yesterday.
Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustinee Tuuga said the two-year-old elephant, which was rescued from Lahad Datu in April has regained its vision.
Four months ago, the department was alerted by Ladang Sahabat Plantation to rescue the wandering baby elephant which they named "Sahabat".
The team found Sahabat wandering as it could not see well as both its eyes were infected.
"Sahabat has fully recovered and our Lahad Datu team has escorted it back yesterday. They should have arrived now.
"Sahabat is expected to be released where it was picked up. It is expected to return to its herd," he said.
Earlier, during the World Elephant Day at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park near here, Augustine said the celebration was meant to give awareness on elephant conservation especially in the state.
"This celebration is also held with a message that elephant conservation is well received and the 'People of Sabah live in harmony with wildlife".
"I am also hoping that the people of Sabah will protect elephants together, for example, we have to be responsible to wildlife when we stumble upon them along Jalan Kalabakan-Nabawan by not disturbing them," he added.
At present, the Bornean Elephant, which exists in the east coast and North Kalimantan, has a population size of about 1,500.
