KOTA KINABALU: PKR is hopeful of contesting in more seats in the 16th State Election as well as in some of the 13 newly gazetted seats.
The party's secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said based on the party's membership strength in Sabah, PKR is hopeful to be given the opportunity to field more candidates in the upcoming state polls.
"Sabah has the second highest PKR membership in the country with 173,907 members mostly from Kota Marudu, Tawau, Pensiangan, Silam, Kudat and Sepanggar.
"The membership is reflection of the acceptance of the party," he said after the launching of the state PKR Jelajah Penerangan programme, here.
Also present at the launch were PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, party Advisory Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and state PKR chief Datuk Christina Liew.
Saifuddin said a PKR entourage led by Anwar had met Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal this morning at the Sabah Administrative Centre, here.
He said the meeting was to fine tune negotiations of 73 state seats among Warisan, Pakatan Harapan, UPKO and Amanah.
Saifuddin revealed that for now, the percentage of seats allotted for PKR is very small compared to other parties but they would nevertheless defend seats as they did during the last General Election.
In 2018, where there were only 60 state seats, PKR had fielded eight candidates but only Liew won the Api-Api seat as well as Kenny Chua for the Inanam seat.
