KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin's apology for accusing university student Veveonah Mosibin of "faking" her predicament has displayed a myopic view on the bigger picture, a Sabah youth leader said.

Sabah Youth Council deputy president Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said the deputy communications and multimedia minister had overlooked the overall internet inaccessibility in the state, during his apology to the Pitas-born lass.

"It is not just in Pitas, an interior district in the north of Sabah. Even in the city, there are areas where connectivity are bad.

"Not to mention other interior areas, the accessibility of the internet is even worse," Abqaree said in a statement.

Zahidi had accused Pitas-born Veveonah of staging a situation to garner views on YouTube for a video, in which she had to climb a tree to sit for an online examination due to weak internet connection in her area.

The statement was made during a debate at the Dewan Negara and received public rebuke.

His apology was later made through video which was posted on Facebook, claiming he was "misinformed" on the situation surrounding Veveonah.

Zahidi also said he would amend his statement in the next Dewan Negara sitting on Monday.

"I am urging the deputy communications and multimedia minister to be careful in issuing a statement or risk hurting the feelings of Sabahans.

"What the ministry has to do is to expedite the broadband project and achieve satisfactory connectivity in Sabah, especially in the interiors," Abqaree said.

Abqaree said the Sabah Youth Council also welcomed Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's announcement on federal commitment to improve communication and internet connectivity in Sabah during his visit here last week.

"We are hoping for the government leaders' commitment to developing the country based on existing capacity."
