KENINGAU: A team of four students from the Keningau Vocational College has become among the first in the country to receive a RM4,000 grant which will be used in emerging technology studies.

The grant was awarded by the Awesome Foundation, a charity organisation which extends monetary aid to fund various projects including on veganism and disabilities.

In a statement, the college said the team comprised of Nezatul Fazlyin Zainal, 19, and 18-year-olds Alesyah Asa, Nur Syahirah Ariffin and Gabriella George.

The four had always been proactive in their field of interest by organising workshops, competitions and exhibitions related to drones, robotics, 3D printing and coding for their fellow students and teachers.

The grant would be utilised to purchase better equipment due to technical malfunctions in their current drones, robots and 3D pens.

"The team aims to empower women in field-related areas by increasing the number of female participants in their projects in line with the concept of Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS).

"They are also determined in turning their activities to be more inclusive by getting learners with special needs like those with hearing impairment to take part actively in their programmes."

The Awesome Foundation recently introduced the grant application for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics projects. There were 78 applications for the projects' grant worldwide.

The grant is to encourage the involvement of students and teachers in using emerging technologies such as drones and 3D printing in creative problem-solving skills.
