SEMPORNA: A family, whose travel plan was cancelled this month, has donated their shopping budget to a non-governmental organisation here to aid humanitarian mission in Semporna.

Hugs project founder Laili Basir said he received RM4,800 from the family from Kuala Lumpur which the organisation plans to use to assist at least 100 families in the district.

"The donors from Kuala Lumpur, who chose to remain anonymous, were supposed to go to Thailand early this month.

"They collected the money among family members. They wished to do something meaningful and memorable by helping the people here," he told the New Straits Times.

Laili said the organisation will work with the police to distribute the aid or arrange for pickup points to avoid direct contacts between the volunteers and recipients.

He is hoping individuals and non-governmental organisations would continue to channel consistent assistance at least for another two months.

As of yesterday, Semporna remains the top area with the highest number of Covid-19 cases - 749 out of 5,063 active cases in the state.

"The community structure in Semporna is different from other places in terms of nationality, accessibility to localities and the level of education.

"For instance the sea gypsies, the authorities took 5 days to go to their area and prevent them from going to Kampung Bangau-Bangau.

"But, it is hard for the sea gypsies as they need to get food and water. Some of them have not eaten for three days," he said, adding that the problem was solved when they finally got some food and fuel.

In Kota Kinabalu, Yayasan Petronas had recently delivered 1,504 bottles of hand sanitisers, 2,400 pieces of surgical masks and 2,390 medical gowns to the Queen Elizabeth hospital here.

Petronas Sabah and Labuan general manager Rokiah Sulaiman said its corporate social responsibility arm believed in the importance of ensuring good health and well-being for all, which is in line with the company's commitment that supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

"To the front line medical heroes, we thank you for your dedication and sacrifice.

"We hope that our contribution will help mitigate the spread of Covid-19," she added.

The state capital has the second highest Covid-19 cases (581) after Semporna.
