KOTA KINABALU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) has urged allies of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government to work together instead of blackmailing Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said its president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.
"I am concerned such actions would invite opportunists to disrupt the functioning of the government just like what Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is doing.
"At a time like this when we are facing Covid-19 and an economic crisis, why should we be adding another problem of political instability to the mix?
"When is it ever going to end? I think they should be helping to strengthen the government rather than weakening it," he said in a statement.
He warned that continued political turmoil and the bringing down of this government could result in the eventual enforcement of a state of emergency to stop the bickering and allow a smoother operation to combat Covid-19.
As for the suggestion by Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) to appoint their chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as interim prime minister until the next general election, Jeffrey said it is an illogical proposal as Mahathir only has support from five members of parliament.
Jeffrey also said the calls for a motion of no-confidence against Muhyiddin was a waste of time as there is no guarantee the next prime minister will last long either.
As for the current coalition government in Sabah, Jeffrey said they have agreed that the parties here would rather concentrate more on what is happening in Sabah presently.
"We are united in Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and our government is focused on fighting Covid-19 and turning around the economy for the welfare and benefit of the people after suffering for almost two years under the Warisan Plus government," he said.
