KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has approved RM160 million Bantuan Prihatin Covid-19 to help people affected by the pandemic, said its Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
"The allocation is in addition to the RM50 million approved by the state government earlier this month.
"The funds, to be disbursed through various ministries in the form of monetary aid will benefit those in the agriculture, tourism, transportation, hawkers, orphans and single mothers, among others," he said in a statement after chairing the weekly cabinet meeting here.
Hajiji said that RM1 million would also be channelled through universities to help institutes of higher learning students affected by the pandemic.
He also announced the establishment of the Sabah Economic Council to discuss ways forward on the state's economic recovery.
The membership of the council, which comprises captains of the industries, businessmen, non-governmental organisations and academicians, will be announced soon.
State Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun had announced that the state had spent RM26.7 million for food baskets and had so far distributed 93,793 as of yesterday.
Sabah has 7,433 Covid-19 cases still receiving treatment with 107 deaths as of yesterday.
