Army sets up treatment centre for Kepayan cluster patients

KOTA KINABALU: The army has begun operating its makeshift treatment centre to assist the Sabah Health Department (JKNS) contain a Covid-19 outbreak at the Kepayan prison cluster, here.

"The makeshift treatment centre started operations (on Friday) involving a Bravo Coy First Royal Medical Battalion.

"The team will be the medical logistics team assisting the JKNS in preventing the spread of infections involving the Kepayan prison cluster," an army statement read.

It added that the centre comprises a pharmacy, an operating room, a store and basic accommodation for staff.

The treatment centre was also set up to provide daily treatment for Kepayan prisoners who have been diagnosed as stage 3 Covid-19 patients.

Stage 3 refers to patients who have developed infection in one or both lungs, but do not require supplemental oxygen.

According to the Health Ministry, the Kepayan cluster has 1,804 Covid-19 cases with 879 still receiving treatment as of yesterday.

The locality, including the prison quarters at Taman Mat Salleh, Kampung Matambai, was placed under an Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from Oct 21.

The EMCO, set to end on Nov 16, involves 2,914 inmates and 597 prison staff.
