KENINGAU: Malaysian alternative rock band, Estranged held an online concert to raise funds for two sisters whose plight, due to lack of internet connection, had led them to study in a makeshift hut on higher grounds.

Band vocalist Richael Lawrence Gimbang or better known as Rich said SMK Keningau students Rechellyna Rinus, 17, and Ryveraa Rinus, 15, who hailed from Kampung Bomboi here had set up the hut at an oil palm farm.

Richael said the two had built a table and benches from logs for their "Puru Online Learning Centre" which is located 600m from their house.

He said the funds would be used to build a study facility equipped with internet connection for the siblings.

"We did the fundraising through an online concert and exceeded the collection target of RM10,000.

"However, with the ongoing Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) throughout the state, construction will be put on hold. The new study facility can accommodate up to five people at a time."

Richael also said the band was collaborating with a telecommunications company to improve internet connectivity in the area.

Estrange is no stranger to community-centric endeavours. The band had earlier worked on hydroelectric projects for several villages in Ranau.

The band is also planning to build a community centre in Tambunan to better engage and understand the people especially on education and youth issues.

"As entertainers, we are bound to the community. We hope to do more for the people."
