KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) appreciates the suggestion by Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan for political parties to not contest the upcoming Batu Sapi by-election.

Warisan secretary general Datuk Loretto Padua said such a proposal showed that Mohamad was concerned over the Covid-19 outbreak in the state.

"We have heard and read reports in the media about our frontliners and doctors in Sabah working tirelessly due to an increasing number of cases.

"As compared to frontliners in Peninsular Malaysia, where there are more of them and with better equipment, we are lacking in many aspects," he said in a statement.

Loretto added that it is the right thing for all, including independent candidates, to cooperate in overcoming the Covid-19 outbreak in the state.

"It is not wrong if all of us are in solidarity about the Batu Sapi by-election so we can focus on the people's welfare and the state economy.

"After all, we just have to wait for another two years for the next general election to be held."

The Batu Sapi parliamentary seat fell vacant after Warisan permanent chairman Datuk Liew Vui Keong died from pneumonia after being admitted to the hospital last month.

The Election Commission has fixed Dec 5 for the Batu-Sapi by-election with nomination on Nov 23 and early voting on Dec 1.
