KOTA KINABALU: Operators of online food delivery services should bear the cost of Covid-19 swab tests and typhoid vaccines for their staff.

State Science, Technology and Innovation minister Datuk Yakub Khan said by doing so, the companies would be seen as fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities, on top of showing that they care about their staff.

He said the delivery services' apps, which could be easily downloaded, have become so popular that they offer a chance at employment for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, including professionals who have lost their jobs.

"As a minister responsible for science, technology and innovation, such technology, including online applications, is a good innovation for users, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Those in the delivery services who are willing to work under any weather conditions, either rain or shine, are at risk of being infected with Covid-19.

"I am proposing it (swab tests and typhoid vaccination), as we know that the rate of positive cases is high. It is to minimise the worrying infectivity rate now," he said in a statement.

Yakub said food delivery riders are exposed to Covid-19, which could endanger themselves, their family members, as well as customers.

He stressed on the need to observe a high level of hygiene and food safety, from food preparation to delivery.

As for typhoid vaccination, he said it is necessary to prevent those infected from passing the bacteria via food or drink.

"I hope the Kota Kinabalu City Hall will help in monitoring the issue as required under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009."
