KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu city council (DBKK) would put more focus on tackling waste management, cleanliness and squatter houses in the state capital here, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir.
"Apart from the additional needs of logistics and enforcement on rubbish issues, DBKK also hopes that the state government will put together a community waste disposal system.
"The system dubbed as a mini modern incinerator will be set up at places such as Gaya Island, where the management cost is high," he said in a statement following a meeting with the local authority here yesterday.
The former mayor, who is now a minister overseeing DBKK, said the squatter colony by the river should also be addressed to prevent water pollution.
He added that the illegal settlements in the city could not be resolved in a short time without a comprehensive approach from the state government.
"DBKK will not be able to settle it alone as it needs the involvement of various departments and government agencies.
"I will discuss in detail with the Local Government and Housing minister on this," he said, urging land owners to play their part in ensuring their land would not turn into illegal settlements.
He also hoped DBKK would continue being included in the gazettement of villages so that matters such as building arrangement, sanitation and utility could be managed better.
Abidin also lauded DBKK for disposing rats, stray dogs and doves, as well as preventing cholera and dengue outbreaks by eliminating the source of illnesses.
