KOTA KINABALU: Sabah government has pledged to resolve water and electricity woes in the state once and for all, said its deputy Chief Minister Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.
"Water companies in other states are making profits. But, in Sabah, what I see for many years, the companies are losing money.
"We are seeing annual losses of RM300 million. How much would it cost in 25 years?
"People have chosen the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government and we will do our job. People deserve access to water and electricity as these are daily necessities," he said, adding he needed time to discuss certain issues with the experts.
Bung, who is also state Public Works minister, said this during the question-and-answer session at the state assembly.
Justin Wong Yung Bin (DAP-Sri Tanjong) had asked on measures taken by the state Public Works ministry to minimise water disruptions due to leaked pipes.
Bung said the Water Department has continued the Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management programme by monitoring the water network system via online to manage the utility supply at respective areas.
"The department has also replaced old pipes and tanks, and controls the pressure and water flow of those pipes which tend to have a high leaking rate.
"By such implementation, the NRW water is expected to reduce from 52 to 48 per cent by the end of 12th Malaysia Plan 2021-2025."
As for Wong's supplementary question on solutions for Tawau's water shortage due to the drought season between February and April, Bung assured that they will come up with solutions.
