KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to see another spike in Covid-19 cases when test results for mass screening exercises at the Telipok and Kampung Numbak settlements here are out.

State Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said starting, tomorrow the state Health Department would do mass screening at both locations.

"Both settlements have a high density of about 21,000 people who are mostly illegal immigrants. Although Sabah has shown a steady (downward) Covid-19 trend for these few days, the results from the said screening would lead to a significant increase of cases in Kota Kinabalu for the next two or three days," he said during the Covid-19 daily virtual press conference.

He said health authorities would mobilise the necessary number of staff to cover the screening of at least 10 per cent of the population at both locations.

Masidi said a Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) has been enforced starting today at both sites after 134 people were found positive at Kampung Numbak and 207 at Telipok.

Today, the state recorded 288 Covid-19 cases with 39.58 per cent due to infections from close contacts here and in Penampang, Tuaran, and Tawau. The rest are from clusters.

There are still 2,346 patients seeking treatment at the hospitals and low-risk treatment centres.

Meanwhile, the government has ended the EMCO at the temporary detention centre and prison as well as the prison quarters here as the active cases were below 25 as of Nov 14.

As for food basket aids, the state government has distributed 173,658 to date.

Masidi added the ministry would take into consideration the increasing number of food baskets after receiving feedback that some households needing more to survive especially when they are locked down for more than a week.
