KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Youtubers community has joined the pledge to spread awareness on eliminating stigma against people infected with Covid-19.
Its president Stanley Loong said people need to be more understanding and be supportive of those who were infected.
"There are people in Sabah who will take videos of those being picked up by the ambulances and after that spread the videos on social media.
"But the reality is these patients are not criminals. They are victims and can be cured through treatment. It is not supposed to be a death sentence for them" he told the New Straits Times.
Loong said he was saddened with how his cousin, a teacher in Tawau who recovered from Covid-19 was being sidelined by the community in her area.
He added that there was also a friend, working at a Covid-19 hospital in Keningau, who received the similar treatment despite not having the disease.
"For example, other people will not touch things such as an A4 paper that was touched by the person before.
"This is why we want to come forward to tell people what Covid-19 is, how it is spread and effects of people being stigmatised," he said.
Loong added that during this trying time, there was not much the Youtubers community could help except doing a video to assist the Sabah Health Department in reaching out to people about the Covid-19 disease.
He said the collaboration will also feature social media influencers Mr Universe Sazali Samad, Cardock, Bro Jep, Kharul Onggon, Nonzy (Apa mau MKn Sabah) and Amar Mauli (Apa Kau Rasa channel) among others.
The multilingual #endstigmanow video of approximately 10 minutes will be released on Loong's channel Angkol Stan and Covid-19 Survivor Sabah Facebook page.
