KOTA KINABALU: The people must bear in mind of the risk involved when attending social gatherings amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the government would not stop them from celebrating any festivities, but the onus would be on them to protect themselves against the novel coronavirus.
"Family members can get together during celebrations, but when it involves outsiders, it will increase the risk as we do not know their health status.
"Some said the 15 minutes of 'fun' experienced during social gatherings may turn into a 15-day suffering (due to Covid-19) after that," he said during a virtual press conference in response to queries on the upcoming Christmas celebration next week.
Masidi, who is also state Local Government and Housing minister, said the same rules applied to family members being allowed to dine outside at the same table.
He added such a relaxation was made as the government had faith that the people would follow the standard operating procedures.
"If a family invites an acquaintance to join them (in the celebration), the virus will not discriminate and can infect anyone.
"When there is a cluster detected, for instance, at a hotel, there are only two possibilities— the premises have to be closed and those present including family members may have been infected with the virus."
