KOTA KINABALU: The new standard operating procedure (SOP) for dive companies, especially on the ferrying capacity of a boat has received mixed reactions.
The SOP, which was issued by the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry yesterday, detailed that a boat could only carry 30 per cent of its respective maximum capacity.
Dive Downbelow managing director Richard Swann said with the new SOP could mean his boat could only take four passengers.
"With only four pax allowed, it is impossible to cover the running costs. But looking at the positive side, we must start somewhere.
"I am aware if rates are too high, locals will not be able to afford it. I am trying to support our sports (industry) and our team (staff) getting back to work," he told the New Straits Times.
The PADI Platinum course director also said his company was offering a discounted individual rate of RM220 for two dives, instead of the normal price of RM380 after diving activities were allowed again recently.
In Lahad Datu, Pirate Divers owner Glen Hapirulla said he could not afford to lose money from operating his dive centre if such a rule continued to be implemented.
He said many locals been on asking for diving trips but the SOP had forced leisure dives to be postponed.
"If the 30 per cent (of boat capacity) also accounts for a boatman, instructors or divemasters, how many divers can we bring?
"Probably, I will just offer diving courses for now after getting more clarification and approval from the district office."
As for Kudat Bluefin Surf and Dive, its co-founder Ivan Tan said it was not feasible to operate during the pandemic.
"We will not open yet until the government allows people to travel inter-district (due to the Conditional Movement Control Order until Dec 6).
"Moreover, the weather is not suitable for diving right now because of the monsoon."
