Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor welcomes the projects under the National Digital Network (Jendela) initiative to expand 4G coverage and boost Internet speed in the state. - NSTP/File picKOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should consistently work together with the Sabah government for the implementation of development projects.
State Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said he welcomed the projects under the National Digital Network (Jendela) initiative to expand 4G coverage and boost Internet speed in the state.
He added that the digital telecommunication coverage in Sabah still lagged behind, with many places in the "dark" without Internet coverage.
"Some even have to climb up a tree just to get clear Internet reception and there was also a case in Kampung Gusi, Ranau where several students were injured after the (suspension) bridge where they gathered to get a better line snapped.
"Therefore, Jendela is a very good initiative by the Federal Government through the MCMC because Sabah is really in need of better connectivity," he said in a statement.
Hajiji was briefed by MCMC Chairman Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi Abdul Maleka via video conferencing at the State Administrative Centre (PPNS) here.
Jendela would be implemented in two phases involving the construction of 41 new telecommunication towers and the upgrading of 924 existing communication transmitters under the Universal Service Provision (USP) programme to 4G.
The RM2.5 billion project will see another 35 new towers and the upgrading of 1,048 communication transmitters in existing towers.
A total of 190,115 premises in the state will also be provided with access to fibre optics.
Hajiji also assured that the state government would assist with proper implementation of the projects by notifying agencies and local authorities for the initiative, particularly for the construction of the new communication transmitters.
"MCMC should get in touch directly with us should they encounter stumbling blocks disrupting the implementation process.
"We will take appropriate action because we do not want the efforts to be hampered," he said.
