KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu city will see the appointment of its first female mayor next year.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall director-general Noorliza Awang Alip will replace Datuk Nordin Siman, whose term as mayor ends on Dec 31.

Noorliza began her career with the council as assistant secretary in 1996.

"This appointment shows that the Sabah government appreciates women and gives them the opportunity to hold important positions.

"Such acknowledgement will definitely become a catalyst and lift spirits among women in the state," said Noorliza in a statement after the appointment ceremony at the state administrative centre, here.

Also receiving an appointment letter from Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor today was deputy state Attorney General Datuk Nor Asiah Yusof.

She will replace Brenndon Keith Soh as state Attorney General, effective next month.

Hajiji said the appointment of two women shows that the state government is willing to let women hold important positions in the state.

"I would like to congratulate Nor Asiah and Noorliza for holding such important positions.

"This is among our efforts to ensure women's participation, especially experienced officers in departments or respective organisations," Hajiji said in a joint statement, adding that he hopes their appointments will bring excellence and competitiveness to the state's governance.

Present were Assistant Minister to Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir; state secretary Datuk Safar Untong; and Sabah Public Services director-general Datuk Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai.

Meanwhile, Sabah Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Srikandi chief Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said the Gabungan Bersatu Sabah-led government is committed to empowering women in the state.

The Beaufort Member of Parliament added that Hajiji is an open-minded leader and does not discriminate between genders in administrative matters.
